“You can’t do anything brave if you’re wearing the straitjacket of ‘what will other people think’”.
I was reading an article called ‘Single Minded’ by Bella Mackie written in this month’s Vogue. She talks about her single life; getting to know who she truly is, doing what she wishes and being with friends that make her feel complete. I feel like this is all something we strive for, and I think it’s good to focus on your Rachel, Monica and Phoebe, as well as your Romeo.
It made me realise the importance of doing things for yourself (maybe even by-yourself too), so you can become authentically you. Figure stuff out about yourself that might just be worth knowing, after all, you’ll be the one person that you’ll need to rely on for the rest of your life. You don’t need other people to let you know who you are – it’s all you, baby! So focus on yourself and do what you like. Step out of your comfort zone and do something brave.. It’s the only way to get braver. Find out what you like, what you don’t like, the kind of person you strive to be, your goals and your limits (mine is spiders).
Never feel bad about whatever situation you may be in. You’ve gotta make a few mistakes and go through a few rough/sad/weird times to learn more about yourself. People go on huge quests to ‘find themselves’ (okay, I’m talking about Gap Yahs), but really, self discovery comes through living in the moment and dealing with life in general. So just go with it, do what makes you happy, and don’t let anyone stop you from doing what you want!
Saying that, it can be a hard task to stay feeling all a-OK and ‘on track’ (whatever that means?). As an almost 21 year old, I know that feelings of confusion, self-doubting and what-am-I-doing-with-my-life(ing?) are just part of the deal. However, I also know that feeling of motivation from the gratitude that comes with being lucky.
The struggle of ‘I need to live life to the fullest but I can’t even afford my almond milk this week’.
Hey, it’s all a work in progress.
Look out for posts on how to student, places to go, people to see, things to do, and music to listen to (#smellycat).
I hope you have a lovely day!
P.S ‘me-lationship’ – relationship with yourself.
